Reasons To Use External Hard Drives

By Charlotte Kaycee

External hard drives are computer brains in a protective enclosure that are portable and can be connected to any desktop or laptop computer. They provide extra storage, the ability to take your data with you, and superior security. This pretty much covers the major concerns with using computers.

Storing large files on an additional hard drive mans that your main computer storage is freed up for current use. Having less data in memory can also make your computer work faster. Downloading music, photographs, eBooks, research records, and any other data you do not need to access daily on an outside hard drive allows you virtually unlimited space. This works very well when you share a computer with others, since you will not have to argue over the use of memory.

Anyone who needs extra storage space or who does not want to clutter up their main computer with large files can use an external drive to store this data. Music, photographs, work in progress, and back up files all can be downloaded to the drive that you only connect to your main computer when you want to access one or more of the stored items.

For families that share computers, having individual hard drives can solve several problems. The computer will be faster if the mainframe is not overloaded with data, arguments over large storage files will be avoided, and sensitive data will not be compromised by inexpert users. A hard drive of your very own is a great gift to give to yourself or others.

Not only can you store data, you can move it around from computer to computer by keeping it on a portable hard drive. You can bring work home from the office, you can work on your desktop or laptop without needing to transfer the data, or you can carry it with you on business trips or vacations. There are many reason why portable files are very convenient.

If you have several external hard drives, you will be able to switch them around in order to use one enclosure, making these devices even more affordable and useful.
