What Causes My Laptop Charger To Get Hot?

By Paul David

You aren't alone if you've just discovered that your laptop computer charger warms up too frequently. One shouldn't take this issue gently. The overheating of laptop adapters can end up in sparks in the circuit. These sparks can permanently destroy your mainboard or worse, lead straight to a fire. If you suspect your power supply isn't in good shape, get in contact with your manufacturer/seller for a replacement or buy a replacement on the internet.

Overheating Reasons: There are a number of possible causes for the laptop adapter to overheat. If you attach the wrong one to your laptop this is one way to make the charger get very hot. This can happen if your laptop requires a 90w power supply and you connect a 65w version instead. The laptop is trying to draw more power from the adapter that it can supply. Having a lot of programs running whilst charging the laptop can also use a lot of power from the laptop's processor, this ultimately increases the heat coming from the charger. When this happens you might have to wait for the charger to cool down however the electronic components inside may be damaged beyond repair in some cases.

The socket inside your laptop where you insert the power supply can also cause an overheating issue. Electrical items like laptop computers run on a certain type of current at low voltage and fixed ampere readings. Overheating may also be caused when this AC/DC convertor isn't working as it should do. This is a major indicator that the power adapter has now begun to fail. Buying a new charger from a recommended online website or a local retail shop is the easiest way to avoid any issues arising due to overheating.

Check the manufacturer's web site for potential recalls: It is possible that a bunch of overheating cases relating to a specific adapter or laptop have been surfacing in different parts of the Earth. This occurs when a company ships laptop chargers or devices with some production failure. In this type of case, most firms recall such defective parts. You're going to need to contact the maker of the portable computer to find out more about such issues.

If you are going to use a charger that is prone to overheating you should try and ventilate it as much as possible and don't leave it under such things as a bed cover or pillow. If you are not using the charger always make sure it's switched off from the wall, this should also extend the life of the item as it's not in use as much.

If you believe there is plastic burning somewhere around your charger, remove it straight away and ready yourself to get a new charger. Such a flawed charger shouldn't ever be placed close to blankets, woolen items, and furniture. Any object that is subject to heat shouldn't be kept close to a laptop adapter.
