Ways To Arrange Admission To Your Colocation Datacentre

By Alfonso Hinton

The safety needs of data centres cannot be modest. There needs to be 24 hour security available to prevent and deal with any security breaches that may be attempted. Data centers have a huge responsibility to ensure that client data that is hosted in their premises is not unlawfully accessed. Failing to ensure the security of client data can expose the data center to legal liability, loss of business as well as other serious consequences. Due to these reasons, organizing a visit to your co-location data center usually will need some preceding planning and communication with the data.

Colocation data centres not like other kinds of data centers have a subtle balancing. They are hosting client hardware which may require frequent access as compared to situations where the hardware is owned by the data center. On this basis, a lot of UK colocation data centers will ask every customer to give a list of people who are to be given access. In a majority of cases the quantity of people to be given access is determined by the quantity of servers hosted. Smaller customers will of course have fewer people let in. There will also be a maximum number of persons even for big clients.

Once the list has been agreed upon, the customer is required to give the required documents and information of the persons to be given access. After this, those on the record can call in to book access times into the data centers. Yet again, depending on how many servers you have hosted, you can expect 24 hour access or working hour access to your servers. The all round the clock access comes with extra charges because every person accessing the data center will be escorted in order to make sure the safety of servers owned by other customers.

In a majority of situations, every person who is given access into the co-location data center should go through training where they are taught about the acceptable processes and security requirements. This is done to guarantee the safety and security of each server hosted in the co-location data center. For example, if one of the persons on the record needs to be replaced or removed, it is the role of the customer to notify the data center as soon as possible.

All non emergency visits to the data center require a notice of at least 24 hours. Communicating your intention to visit a few days before is advantageous to both the client and data center. You stand a better chance of getting a time slot that works best for you. In the case where you have a separate lockable space for your servers, the data center could issue an access card that would allow you frequent unescorted access to your servers.

Every co-location data center will have their exceptional safety needs and processes and it is necessary to understand them from the word go. Failure to comply will automatically deny you or your staff access to the servers. Although it may appear to be too strict, access to co-location data centers ought to be controlled in order to guarantee the safety of each server including yours.
