Memjet Has It All

By John Pickering

Most of us have a solid understanding of how a printer delivers our final images and documents to us. Paper feeds through the machine. A print head will move back and forth in an orderly manner to distribute ink to the paper. The print head receives the information from the computer, which is how it knows how much ink to put onto the paper. When it is finished, we have our final result - though on some occasions we still may have to wait a bit for the ink to dry. As science and technology continues to move and provide us with more innovative ideas than ever before, printers are faster, ink dries sooner, and print heads dash back and forth to give us our images and documents in a fraction of the time than what it took them before.

When you see the technology of Memjet, it almost seems like common sense. A single print head that is as wide as the paper. In fact, one might almost wonder just why it took so long for someone to come up with the idea! Memjet is a long print head that settles into the printer and prints on paper the same time it slides through. No start-stop motion of the paper as it waits for the print head to move from one side to another. Printers may be quite fast now, but picture your printer's current speed and imagine in it were 8 times faster. This is because Memjet uses what the creators call "waterfall" technology. The print head has 70,000 jets that shoot millions of droplets of ink per second.

When you see a Memjet printer head in action, all your notions of how fast a printer can be and how it can keep high quality as the same time will be shattered. In all likelihood, you'll wonder how you've never heard of Memjet before. Memjet takes the idea of a smaller, back and forth printer head and tosses it out the window. Instead, they've created a single printer head that is as wide as the sheet of paper you want to print on. This means you can make photos, documents, labels, and more with speed you never thought possible.

The creators behind Memjet looked at every aspect of printing in order to make it faster. Not only did they make a single printer head that has no need to waste time moving, but they also created a new controller chip, new software, and even new ink! With one print head doing all the work, they wanted water-based ink of the highest quality. Ink that would be free of impurities in order to give the Memjet print head a long lasting life. Ink that would absorb into the paper immediately, leaving no worries of smearing ink after printing or any need to wait.

Memjet has taken years to develop this new technology and hopes to be in the homes of the future. What's more, the developers at Memjet don't intend to keep this technology to themselves. Instead of making their own printers and print heads, they are licensing their technology to other companies. This means more printers will be available with the technology for super fast printing. Other companies like Lexmark, Brothers, Epson, and Canon will no longer have the printing monopolies they have today. More options will be available to the average person.

Memjet printer heads aren't relegated to one use, either. They won't be just for pictures or just for documents. Instead, Memjet printer heads can handle typical printer tasks, labels, photo retail, and even wide formats. The print heads are fast, quiet, and ready to be the next big thing in printing. The news lines are buzzing already with Memjet's innovation. Keep a sharp eye out for future developments in the world of Memjet. Before long you may see them in stores and available for use at home.
