The History of Web Hosting

By William MacMahon

Many people may not be remember life without the internet but it was only back in 1990 when web hosting came to life as this was when Tim Berners Lee developed the initial program for the web. This was followed by a variety of programs and soon companies were developing web hosting services of their own and this has created the modern environment where there is a huge level of growth in hosting web sites. Web hosting may seem like a familiar term but before 1991, this term was unheard of, which means so was the internet. If you would like to study the growth of the internet, a great place for research is the internet itself which shows you how far it has developed. Recent decades has seen an explosion in technological advances and after the radio and television products, the internet is probably the next biggest. Bear in mind there are over 50 million websites on the internet and think what you would look at if you didn't have websites to view.

How it all started.

The concept of the Internet had been brought forward in August, 1962, by J.C.R. Licklider, at the MIT. He wrote many articles where he saw a vision of the concept of Galactic Network, which connected millions of computers with each other, where the resources were common for everybody to use. Licklider was then supposed to visit the Advanced Research Project Agency [ARPA], which was the program of Computer Science at MIT. He would try to impress the successors of the need to develop the concept of computer networking.

It is always interesting to be aware of the political background at the time and ARPA was developed at the same time as NASA. After the Russians launched Sputnik, their artificial satellite, there was a huge need for the Americans to keep pace with their Soviet counterparts. The first form of computer networking came through packet switching, which enabled data to be transferred as tiny packages through telephone lines which was a huge improvement over the previous form of utilizing circuit lines that were solid. A great benefit was that this connection was busy only when information was passing through and this helped to free up room to allow the computer to undertake additional tasks. Paul Baran invented the Hot Potato network design when he was trying to create a package that would ensure telecommunication data to be passed in the event of a nuclear war. This design was to play a major role in the development of the internet.

Following on from this, was the process that allowed computers to talk back and forth to each other and there is no doubt that 1991 was a pivotal year for the development of the internet. It was already around before then but this year was the base for the internet to grow into much bigger things. A major step came when the National Science Foundation] NSF] made a judgment that the web restrictions that prohibited commercial activity should be lifted. This changed everything and resulted in much more scope and possibilities for the internet. What is now known as e-commerce was born and a whole host of companies who foresaw the benefits the internet would bring came rushing in behind. It was at the tail-end of 1991 that WWW or the World Wide Web started to be used by CERN and it incorporated Hyper Text Markup Language [HTML.] HTML was developed by Tim Berner Lee and it was linked to the website address or it's Uniform Resource Locator [URL.] That's a whole of abbreviations to learn but it is now synonymous with the location of addresses for websites and the World Wide Web.

Internet no longer remained confined to the computer technicians, but with additions being constantly made to its format, it became increasingly used by the common man due to ease of understandability. But the complexities of the internet grew as well. The business sector forecasted that internet would have a great future, and they capitalized on it.

As the internet was starting out, it was expensive to host a web site but this is no longer the case but although it has gotten cheaper, it is still very difficult for some to use. There is no doubt that renting server space has now become a major business and it is true that there are as many firms offering services to host web sites as there are providing internet access. As computers have evolves, so has the internet. Equally, the business world has developed at a greater pace with the addition of web host providers and computers.

There are statistics available to state that more than 35,000 businesses host over 100 websites on the server they own. It is easy to see that there is huge growth with this level of competition, and in the time this article has been read, there have been probably hundreds more companies who have joined up also. The NeXt machine had the glory of having the first WWW program written for it and it was a hypertext editor that provided it. A student by the name of Nicola Pellow created a line mode browser and this was to help others researching a specific topic to have somewhere to discuss. Listings of UDI, HTML and HTTP were provided by the server to enable this discussion. For machines that were not NeXt, browsers such as Cello or Mosaic were created to enable other users to access the internet. The World Wide Consortium came into being in 1994 when a number of companies joined to create a system of shared protocols that could be used on the Web and this moment can be seen as the true birth of the web.

Earlier versions had seen the use of a number of TCP/IP features which allowed users to network but at the time, it was not known what the potential for this setup was going to be. Recent IETF meetings have viewed these TCP/IET protocols with more praise and acceptance than previously and have acknowledged the advances since then. To enable this expansion, tools were needed and how best to enable this was the basis for much debate. As networking was a key issue, products to enable this were developed and this allowed users to be able to connect to the internet. At the time, this was the edge of what commercial possibilities stretched to but as more people got online in huge numbers, it was vital for people to have this service and the internet easily captured the interest of many ordinary people. The advances made by the internet were down to huge technological improvements.

This is why many Information Technology firms and trend setters, such as Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, IBM and many more have got into the internet industry and provides services, products and tools to better the service of web applications. People dont want to think about too much on the internet, they mainly just want to get to a specific site and this is the way that web servers have been created to perform.

In addition to tools and services, there has been a requirement for the makers of hardware to improve the size of their power servers to ensure the growth of the web hosting industry continues. There is no doubt that the way the internet is used today is drastically different from its origins. It may have started off with Personal Computers onto the client server and then to the Peer to Peer [P2P] type network. There have been abundance of different features that came to life thanks to the internet and these include passing of information and data, communicating via email, being able to log on remotely and many other useful functions. It seems that if you want it you can have it but also bear in mind that the internet is still rapidly developing. With television and videos on the internet being the latest features, it may be hard to predict what is coming next on the internet but whatever it is, it should be interesting.

Finding the Best Hosting Control Panel

By Gregory Trune

A control panel is provided by a web host. As suggested by the name, it is the controlling mechanism for the website and helps in managing the website. Control panel is the one place from where a user can do everything that is needed to be done, while hosting a website, this includes tracking statistical information like traffic information, creating FTP accounts, setting up email accounts, adding sub-domains, databases, managing files, among many other things.

There are a number of different control panels available in the market. These include Cpanel which is among the most popular, Hostopia, Sphera, Ensim, VDeck, NextGenCP etc. They all differ in their look and feel as well as functions. Web hosts usually have their own control panel preferences, which depend upon the platforms they use. The control panels are selected according to their features and ability to perform on a particular platform.

These are all features that can be found in a control panel:

Parked Domains

Mail Manager

Addon Domains

Error Log

Hot Link Protection

PostgreSQL Database Manager

Backup

Password Protect Directories

Parked Domains

MySQL Database Manager

FTP Manager

File Manager

MS SQL Manager(Windows only)

Frontpage Extensions

Index Manager

Subdomain

SSL Manager

Error Log

Subdomain Stats

Redirects

Frontpage Extensions

Cron Jobs

Web/FTP Stats

Hot Link Protection

Index Manager

IP Deny manager

There are issues that separate control panels, and one is how it easy the panel is to use. A panel like Plesk may offer simple and friendly tools and options whereas cPanel offers many functions. To ensure you make the right choice of control panel, you need to know what is available. You can find out more by studying the following:

cPanel:

cPanel is very commonly used on Linux based systems, it provides support for more than 10 different flavors of Linux, and as of yet, it does not have a Windows or OSX based version. cPanel helps users in managing/controlling everything, from administering MySQL database to creating and deleting email accounts and much more.

cPanel has a whole range of functions and provides much more than the majority of control panels. The amount of functions offered is a key reason why it is so popular, that and it is cheap.

Plesk:

Plex is available for Linux and Windows web hosting servers where cPanel is not. Many users find it helpful that Plex has an interface similar to Windows XP. The control panel looks good and offers many features available in cPanel. It can enable any user to build their own site with easy to sue tool. It offers many features but it may be viewed as more expensive than other products, especially cPanel.

H-Sphere:

Many users appreciate HSphere. Similar to Plesk, it is compatible with Windows and Linux. Many functions are provided including the ability to have complete automation and many key functionalities but it offers less than Plesk or cPanel.

DirectAdmin

DirectAdmin is unique as it offers many services other panels do not but it does lack some of the functions offered by the main panels. It has a limited range of support with only a few Linux versions and no Windows support but it is a cheap option.

Ensim

Available for Windows and Linux, Ensim doesn't have a lot of features but it has an interface that is adequate.

Interworx

Interworx also caters only to Linux based Web hosting servers. It has got a clean and well-organized interface with some impressive features like the site usage snapshot.

Hosting Accelarator

Only available on Windows web hosting servers, Hosting Accelerator is not recommended for novices as it has a crowded interface that may be confusing.

Helm

This is another Windows only web host server and this offers the ability to view billing details from within the control panel.

CWIPanel

There is not a lot to be said for CWIPanel except it offers Windows support and is quite average.

InsPanel

This control panel has also been made only for windows based web hosting server. This is an average product with standard features.

There are many control panels but cPanel remains the favorite due to its cost, easy to use functions and wide range of features.

Among the recently developed control panels, Pandela.com has come out with its NectGenCP control panel. It has been in development, since a few years and one must say that it is really impressive.

You can tell that modern internet technology has shaped this product. It is simple to use and has been created specifically for web hosting clients. It has such a great ease of use that even novices can pick it up in next to no time. It is said it takes no more than mouse clicks to perform any function. It may seem simple but there is a lot going on and all of the functions aid web site management. The makers of the service have also issued all users with a challenge and if they can think of something they would like in the next version of the product, they will incorporate it.

Features contained within NextGenCP:

Domain Control:

Users have full control over their domain as well as sub-domain. They can also register and host their own domain names easily and quickly.

Learn how to manage your own database:

NextGenCP makes it very easy to create a database for the website. All it takes is a few clicks! The database management is done by phpMyAdmin and the data is backed up by Database Backup Manager.

Accounts for mail:

It is easy for users to control and access their email accounts. An advanced SPAM filtering system is provided by Pandela.com and this will keep your inbox free of junk and unwanted emails. If this isn't enough, there are also filters for the mail, assistance for accounts and other functions.

Use tools to improve your site:

NextGenCP offers many tools to improve the site and managing a website has never been simpler. Script Installer, Hotlink protection and IP Access Manager are just some of the tools on offer.

Find the statistics behind your site:

This information will provide total knowledge of visitors and show how much bandwidth is being used and the usage of email accounts per day.

Support System

Every user of this product will be granted full support assistance. By sending off a support ticket, the matter will be considered by a staff member very quickly. It is said that the average time for response is 15 minutes.

With so many impressive features, there is no doubt that NextGenCP looks one of the best web host control panels ever created. It is also good to hear that Pandela.com is promising to continually improve the service each and every day.

How to Use Web Hosting Scripts Effectively

By Matt Ewing

Web hosting scripts have ability to increase the function of your website, just like a php script. Scripts such as Word Press are given away free by web hosts to their clients. The key function of the scripts is to enable website owner to improve the functions that are featured on their website for a minimal time and charge.

Some of the web host scripts are mentioned below:

Fantastico is a script library used for commercial purposes, and it helps in automation of the process of installing web applications to a given site. These scripts can be executed only by the website administrator, from the Control Panel. The website of Fantastico has it that they have been installed on more than 10,000 servers and they have millions of users throughout the world, which is a major factor in making them the leading product in this regard.

These scripts run upon a new application being added to an existing website or when a new website is made. Installing this software can assist a user in configuring their web server file better or assist them in making tables with regards to databases. Fantastico is generally seen as software that is gained in an open source manner but some scripts can be purchased. After installation, every domain on a server can use the script. This means that a server host could place SohoLaunch's website builder or PerlDesks customer support software to be used by every client, enabling them better interaction with other internet users.

Over 50 applications are linked with Fantastico scripts, with the most popular ones being:

shopping cart software

* blogs

* sharing of pictures

* web content management system

* Wikis

There is a choice to be made between Linux and Windows web hosts and it is not an easy one. A user has to know the language that their website uses before they choose which operating system they require. The Linux platform is best suited to the websites that offer basic HTML content or a simple e-Commerce website or a php or MySQL created site. If you use or plan on using ASP or ASP.NET then you need to use a Windows server.

Having used the terms PHP, MySQL and ASP.NET, it is very important to discuss about them in detail.

Hypertext Preprocessor is the full name for the term PHP and it is a server side scripting language or a language used for programming. One of its advantages is the ease you can place a HTML code in it. PHP is commonly found beside APACHE on a number of operating systems, and it is commonly found on LINUX. PHP has a strong role as a filter and it eventually showcases a specific flow of data after it has filtered information from files storing content and instructions coming from PHP. PHP is provided free on the majority of servers, platforms and operating systems.

MySQL has a number of uses and its primary use is for finding and controlling data. It is a computer language for numerous users and has many threads and is handy for users who need to get hands on with their data and need to change it about. It is a management system for SQL databases that has a huge number of uses. MySQL is most frequently found on web applications, used as an open source tool for tracking bugs and to act as a database component on MAMP, LAMP and WAMP. There is no doubt that there are similarities between MySQL and PHP as well as "Ruby on Rails." The vast majority of sites that are similar to Word Press will only work on a mixture of MySQL and PHP.

ASP.NET, otherwise known as Active Server Page is a Microsoft product that is strongly marketed and is also the companies .NET platform division. It has superseded the technology that developed ASP and provides many uses for programmers including creating websites and XML / web applications. In reducing the number of codes required to build a web application, ASP.NET assists in simplifying the process. As it supports a number of .NET languages it improves the flexibility a user has in choosing a language. The combination of HTML and source code ensures that it is easier to compile and maintain web pages. Another benefit comes in the fact that the configuration information is built in means that there is no need to register separate components. ASP.NET is also extremely fast and is able to satisfy a large number of users with no noticeable difference in performance.

Now you are armed with knowledge about these technical descriptions, you can make a more informed decision regarding the server. Although there may be some problems in trying to use CGI scripts to automate the website, there is no doubt that repeated use will make it a far easier task over time.

Starting with a simpler script is the way to begin. You can visit cgi-resources.com for some CGI scripts. You will find some free and paid scripts for mails, website management, banner rotation, classified ads, protection of password, polls, mailing lists, having a search engine for your site, shopping carts and a host of other activities. Though a fee is charged for some of the scripts, you can save money by using a less expensive script and instead of calling on an expert from the company to set it up, you can do so yourself. Remember that costliest is not always the best since some of them may have more features than what you may require.

There is a feeling amongst many webmasters that a degree in computer science is required for utilizing scripts but this is not the case. Yes, to use a CGI script, access to the server is required but there are providers who will customers the opportunity to upload, at no cost, a CGI script. This enables users to sample different types of CGI scripts before deciding what is best for them.

Running a CGI script is not difficult if the scripts contain a config file or a setup file. After these files have been loaded onto the server, gaining access to the setup or config files will enable the script to set itself up automatically after content is placed in it. An alternative to this is using a variable file. This type of file will ordinarily have the majority of the information that is needed for the script to run and the most used scripts are likely to have a number of files which require configuration before working.

Most scripts are provided with a read-me or setup file which can be read in HTML text. The instructions are contained within after opening the file up. There are clear and concise instructions to be found on many scripts but some writers will make an assumption that the user does not any directions. If this is the case, it may be possible to examine similar scripts to gain an understanding of how it works.

A major reason for choosing CGI scripts is that it will make your site a lot easier to maintain and increase the level of interaction that is available on the site.

Barcode Scanner - Sorts And Advantages

By James Cook

A barcode scanner or reader is an apparatus utilized to lure and browse info included in a barcode. This gadget could also be a handheld or fastened stationary type.

There are three essential parts of a barcode reader. These are the scanner, the decoder and a cable. The decoder could both be seen externally or built-in to the device. The cable attaches the reader to a computer by way of numerous mechanisms corresponding to keyboard or serial port, or a wedge.

A wireless barcode scanner directs a beam of light throughout the bar code. The scanner transforms the sunshine into electrical energy. The decoder converts the electrical vitality into data of numbers and letters. These data is forwarded to a PC to be analyzed by software.

There are several forms of barcode readers and these are as follows.

Wireless barcode scanner. This one is very important when assortment of information away from a computer is required. It's more popularly generally known as a cellular computer and knowledge collector, and it serves as a versatile gadget for classy capture of information.

It makes use of various operating methods similar to Windows Cellular, Palm and Linux. Only a wireless barcode scanner can provide you ease of mobility.

At times, you merely want to leave your pc to secure the data. Or, you will have to gather information far away from any laptop and have the data transferred from the scanner to the computer. You may also should be self-enough of a pc and like to work to a database on the network.

With this, the barcode scanner can offer a wireless network connection, and the operating system might be directing to the source of knowledge to update it.

Slot scanner. This kind of reader is fixed. Its foremost function is to learn bar codes on identification cards. It's useful in offices when logging in employees or time of verify-in.

The Charge Coupled System or CCD. It is a reader typically used in retail stores. This one's offer an improved scan and browse-extent compared to the pen wand. This gun-typed interface gadget needed to be carried an inch from the bar code.

Pen wand. This pen-formed or wand-formed system affords economic system and durability. Thought of as the best barcode scanner, pen wand works by moving the tip of the pen throughout the bar code in a gentle even motion. The tip of the pen must are available direct contact with all the bar codes.

Picture scanner. It is also being known as a digital camera reader and normally has a lower cost than laser reader. It has a constructed-in tiny video digicam that captures pictures from the bar code. It then employs superior digital processing system for decoding. It will possibly scan a bar code from three to inches away. This is the latest of all the barcode readers.

Laser scanner. It is ready to do 500 scans every second and might effectively work even at 24 inches away from a bar code. Some models can even scan a bar code from as much as 30 toes away. These are specialized lengthy-range laser scanners.

Advantages of utilizing a Barcode Reader

It could do faster scanning compared to a human data encoder. For example, a pen wand can scan a bar code stage of 12 characters at the identical time when a data encoder can perform two key strokes. It could also present companies with accurate information entries. It prevents the entry of invalid information. It implies that all data entered or inputted are highly reliable.

Learn How You Can Make PC Games For Yourself

By Joanna Fredricson

If you have ever played a PC game and thought that you could do better then you may be interested in testing this belief. Making your own PC games is not only possible, but it is also one of the most rewarding things you can do. It may be that you have always wanted to do this and if this is true then you won't mind the hard work and time you will have to dedicate to such a project.

You will learn a lot by making your own game and if you are lucky you might even be able to sell it you never know. Here are a few tips for how to make your own PC games.

- The first thing you need to do is get an idea. You have probably already thought of a theme for your game before now if you have always wanted to do this. In order to make your game idea more concrete you will have to go into detail when describing it. You have to detail everything on a piece of paper.

If your game is going to involve a story then you will need to write this down in great detail. How you want the characters to look is another thing you can write down. The more details you have now for the game the easier it will be later.

- If you want to build the game you will have to learn a programming language; alternatively you can just use one of the game building platforms that are already available. A suitable language would be C++ or GameMaker language.

- Paying someone else to build the game for you might be a good alternative if you don't like the idea of doing this yourself. However you may find it more rewarding if you take care of the programming yourself.

How are Computers Recycled?

By Adriana Noton

Just about every household now has a computer, with many having more than one computer. With new technology constantly being developed and released, upgrading to a new computer is common occurrence. This means that there are hundred of thousands of computers that are disposed of each year. Because computer components contain toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and carcinogens, disposal in a landfill is hazardous to the environment. Today, to protect the environment and reduce waste, recycling computers has become an established method of managing unwanted computers.

There are now a number of companies and organizations that accept computers for recycling. Computer systems in good condition are labeled to be used again, and then overhauled, and sold for a discount. Computers that cannot be refurbished are taken apart and checked out for working parts. When a computer is sent for recycling, the unusable parts are separated into specific categories that include: motherboards, plastics, and metal. They are then sold to the recyclers. Anything that is not reused or recycled will be incinerated. This saves the computers from going into the landfills. Dell is one large company that has established a Computer 'Take-Back' program. Their goal is to reuse about 85% of the materials from the computers.

Another way of recycling computers is refurbishing an old computer and either resell it or give it to a charity. There are programs set up where people can drop off their computers at a specified location or they can have them picked for recycling. Staples and Dell are two companies that have such a program. You can also check with the manufacturer of your computer to see what recycling programs the company offers. If they do not have a program, there are Computer Recycling businesses that will take any computer including its system units, printers, monitors, and peripherals. As well, Dell and Apple have developed electronic end-of-life programs. You can find some type of recycling or end-of-life program in almost every state in the United States and almost every province in Canada. There are even companies that have partnered with schools to provide refurbished computers to the schools. You could also donate a computer to your favorite charity.

Another way to dispose of your computer is to contact your local government office to find out if they have special electronics pick up days where they will take the computer for recycling or proper disposal. These special e-waste collection days will also be advertised in newsletters, fliers, or in local newspapers.

Because there are so many computers that people want top get rid of each year, Computer recycling is a wise choice. With the average lifespan of computers becoming shorter, computer recycling has become a vital part of proper waste management. It is good to know that there are a wide variety of computer recycling options available so hopefully everyone will have computer recycling program near them. When you are ready for a new computer, take advantage of one of the many recycling computers programs in your area. It is always rewarding to protect the environment and help other people.
