Tips For Virtual Machines

With the increasing popularity of Virtual Machines comes an issue that many may not be aware of. This problem is an age-old issue that has affected systems from the very early days of storage. It can cause hard drive failure leading to expensive data loss scenarios necessitating data recovery professionals. This problem is, of course, fragmentation.

Virtual machines must still make use of the slowest part of any modern computer system: hard drive technology. Hard Drives can be partitioned to appear as dedicated individual devices, these devices are then often utilized to store virtual partitions and virtual operating systems. Underneath this "virtual" layer, the hardware is storing data as it always has, in a fragmented inefficient manner.

Fragmentation occurs on all hard drives and is part of the way the operating system stores the data on a disk. It won’t lay it down nice and neatly in one continuous block, but will lay it wherever there is a space. One file could literally be split into many separate places on the hard disk and this is fragmentation. If you have one OS running it can be bad but if you are running virtual machines the problems is far more serious.

Fragmentation will not only slow down your computer or server but due to the excessive and unwarranted extra movement of the heads, the life of your storage device(s) can be seriously reduced. The problem is not only limited to single drives however, even if you have a very well specked raid set up, fragmentation can get so severe that the only viable option is data recovery or server rebuild.

You would like to think that as the problem of file fragmentation has been with us since the advent of hard drive based computer systems, operating system vendors would have come up with a software solution to ensure the problem is eradicated at source. Whilst Mac OS X will partially help with files under a 20 mb size, Windows operating systems seem to pay it no heed whatsoever.

Defragmentation utilities can take care of this problem, however, running them practically ties up the machine until completion, slowing the machine to a crawl. So what can be done to remove this issue? There are a number of possibilities that can be tried.

Fortunately we are not left to the operating systems alone as there are a number of third party defragmentation applications that are far superior to the inbuilt OS tools. These can be scheduled to run when system usage is very low for example whilst the system is idle or the screen saver is running. As you go defragmentation is my personal choice.

Invest in dedicated hardware. Not the cheapest solution but for business and power user home systems probably the most sensible route. Dedicated hardware could be an additional hard drive (internal or external) a dedicated raid array or even an SSD device. The actual solution will depend on how mission critical the application actually is.

Ensuring your systems are working in tip top condition is vital to maintaining a productive IT infrastructure. For more great computing tips visit the IT Support Manchester , or click here for hard drive repair information and raid data recovery advice.

Nvidia computer will have 250 times the processing power of a typical PC

Hardware maker Nvidia has announced a new computer that has the power of a cluster of computers at a small fraction of the cost.

Nvidia, working with several partners, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Western Scientific, and others, has developed the Tesla Personal Supercomputer, using the graphics processing unit based on Nvidia's Cuda parallel computing architecture.

Burton Smith, a technical fellow at Microsoft stated while there have been claims of desktop supercomputers in the past, "this time it's for real,"

Nvidia representiatives say computers using the Tesla C1060 GPU processor will have 250 times the processing power of a typical PC workstation, enabling researchers to run complicated simulations, experiments and number crunching processes without the need for a supercomputing cluster.

The so-called "personal supercomputer" will incorporating anywhere from between two to four Tesla C1060 processors, which are made up of 240 stream processing cores.

Most computer cluster will run a 100 times the cost of one of the Tesla-powered workstations. The Tesla C1060 card, available on computers Tuesday, will sell for $1,699, with desktop computer systems including the card selling for less than $9,995, said Andrew Humber, an Nvidia spokesman. The systems would run at a processing speed of four teraflops, or four trillion floating point operations per second.

"This represents phenomenal price/performance for computational researchers who have typically had to compete for time on expensive and power-hungry clusters," the Nvidia spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Several institutions, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Cambridge University, and the Max Planck Institute are already using GPU-based personal supercomputers.

"GPU based systems enable us to run life science codes in minutes rather than the hours it took earlier," Jack Collins, manager of scientific computing and program development at SAIC-Frederick's Advanced Biomedical Computing Center in Frederick, Maryland, said in a statement. "This exceptional speed of the Telsa has the ability to accelerate the discovery of potentially life-saving anti-cancer drugs."

With most High Performance Computer (HPC) clusters and supercomputers are powered by conventional CPUs, Nvidia is betting that its general-purpose GPUs can offer the types of performance that scientists, researchers and other workers in the HPC market need now to run these types of massive workloads.

PSP Software - Updates and Releases

When Atari debuted in the 80's, it was a revolutionary gaming system. People were amazed at the games and controllers. Pong was an instant favorite, but when Nintendo debuted it completely eclipsed Atari's graphics and gaming potential. Then Sony debuted the Playstation and history was made. Gone were the laughable graphics of its predecessors and instead 16-bit graphics ruled the technology world. PSP software was an extension of the PSP system and changed how portable hand-held gaming systems worked.

One of the many things that set Sony Playstation Portable above other handheld gaming consoles is the software. Unlike conventional handhelds, such as the Gameboy, the PSP system is capable of updating itself and acquiring new software codes and security measures through its Wi-Fi connection. This connection is the very same as those found in laptops and even cellular phones.

If one thing could be said about Sony and their game playstation, it would be that they take their security measures seriously. PSP software updates are constantly released to make the system run safer and far smoother. The downloads take place through a USB cable connected between the PSP system and your computer. The downloads update the security software and allow for smoother loading times.

The amount of software updates is nothing compared to the added security and functions brought to the game. Take for example the most recent updates released by Sony. In 2007 alone there have been at least eleven updates that ranged from security measures to adding enhanced customization to the Playstation Portable, original version, and the new PSP Slim & Lite. There is now an enhanced bit-rate for gaming, as well as features to make watching videos much easier. Sony has also taken into consideration the need to make support simpler for their users by issuing a software update in October 2007.

Sony has to keep an eye out on its chief competitors Nintendo and Microsoft. So far there is not any news on whether or not a portable Xbox system will be debuted or even developed. Sony is not taking any chances. They want to continuously tweak the PSP software so that the security and gaming features are top of the line. Already the Sony Playstation Portable PSP system can play movies and music but before long it will be able to do much more.

PSP Reviews and Views on Cnet Website

Games for PSP

It is a simple fact that no matter how far science and technology has taken the world, opinion is what drives and shapes it. Unless they are completely mindless, every single person has an opinion. It is this opinion that can make or break a product. Take for example the Sony Playstation Portable system. PSP reviews are what potential buyers read up on before they plunk down a wad of cash or plastic to purchase the gaming console. Buyers want to know if the PSP is going to be worth the investment. Is it? You have to decide that after reading the reviews.

If you were to google PSP reviews, you would be given hundreds of listings where the PSP was debated. Most of the reviews come from other buyers who have purchased the new Playstation Portable and have commented on its assets, as well as its deficits. The best advice for reading and sorting through all of the reviews and discussions is to find a reliable website or company that has an unbiased opinion.

One great place you can go to find PSP reviews is Cnet.com. Cnet is an absolutely fantastic website designed with the technologically and computer savvy consumer in mind. Not only do they offer reviews on such popular gaming systems as the Sony Playstation Portable, but also offer technical help as well with computers and gaming consoles. What was their rating of the PSP system? Cnet gave it 8.1 out of 10.

Cnet gave a positive review of the graphics and gaming abilities of the Sony PSP Playstation Portable. But, they found that the multimedia functions left a lot to be desired. The problem, as stated by the reviewer, was the impossibly long load times and the expensive memory cards. Cnet's members gave the PSP a score of 7.8 out of 10. Members cited problems with the gaming discs, size, battery life and audio as key factors in their less than stellar praise of Sony's latest endeavor. But keep in mind that unlike professional reviews, personal reviews can be based on preference for another gaming system.

PSP reviews can help shed some light on issues that you may want to seriously consider before purchasing a new Playstation Portable system. Even if you decide to go ahead and make the purchase, you will have educated yourself on the potential negatives surrounding the gaming console. Become an educated consumer and read the opinions of others before making one yourself.
